COME TO COLUMBUS NEXT WEEK FOR THE “MOTHER OF ALL RALLIES”!

Blogged under Ohio, Take Action! by admin on Monday 27 April 2009 at 12:13 pm

Tuesday, May 5th, is International Midwives’ Day, and Ohio Families for Safe Birth and the Ohio Midwives Alliance are bringing the message home to our legislators: Now more than ever, OHIO needs midwives!

We are asking all Ohio midwifery supporters to come to the Mother of All Rallies at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 5th, on the South Lawn of the Statehouse. The more people show up, the stronger the message to our legislators that Ohio families need midwives! So bring your family, your friends and neighbors!

Here is the Facebook page for the rally, and click here for directions and to RSVP so that we can arrange a face-to-face appointment with your representative — we’ll provide a handout, talking points, and a “lobbying buddy” if desired, so that you can let your rep know how important midwives are to you. We can also help connect you with others from your area to carpool — let us know what you need to make it to the rally next Tuesday. For more information please contact Kathy Skestos (Kathleen@skestos.com) or Audra Phillips (audralp@earthlink.net).

Hope to see you there!

Letter to the Editor from Ryan in Columbus

Dear Editors:

In response to “Home-birth advocates press pro-midwife campaign” on January 28, I am surprised that Ohio has yet to formally recognize the Certified Professional Midwife license as a standard for direct-entry midwives.

Licensed midwives provide the majority maternity care for low-risk births in many industrialized countries – all of which have better infant and maternal health rates than the United States.

Nearly all Ohioans have been born in hospitals, so it is natural for hospitalized childbirth to seem like the safest possible option. Yet, decades of research point to out-of-hospital alternatives for safe, healthy maternity care. Recently, a 2005 British Journal of Medicine study concluded that out-of-hospital births supported by midwives with clinical training have lower rates of medical intervention and equal rates of neonatal mortality as low risk births in hospital settings.

The best maternity outcomes occur when midwives, nurses, primary care doctors, and obstetricians work collaboratively to support all families through the entire range of pregnancies and deliveries.

We can begin developing this joint effort by working together to support a clear standard that recognizes the importance of clinically-trained, certified professional midwives in Ohio.

WHERE OFSB STANDS: THE CPM LICENSURE INITIATIVE

Blogged under CPMs, Ohio by admin on Saturday 9 August 2008 at 11:26 pm

The CPM Licensure Initiative is a statement that clarifies the mission and sums up the goals of Ohio Families for Safe Birth in advocating for a new state law licensing Certified Professional Midwives. This is the statement that groups or individuals are signing on to when they join the coalition.

Ohio Families for Safe Birth CPM Licensure Initiative:

Increasing Access to Out-of-Hospital Maternity Care Services through state regulation of Certified Professional Midwives

MISSION

 Ohio Families for Safe Birth (OFSB) is a consumer-driven effort to create a statewide coalition of families and professionals promoting legislation and policies grounded in the Midwives Model of Care which support families’ access to safe, appropriate, evidence-based care during pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum. Our purposes are:

  • Supporting legislation that licenses Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) in Ohio;

  • Raising awareness and support for families choosing an out-of-hospital birth as a safe, appropriate option;

  • Supporting safe family and baby initiatives in all birth settings.

PREAMBLE

WHEREAS in 2005, Ohio Department of Public Health Vital Statistics documented 969 home births in Ohio;*

WHEREAS childbirth is a normal, healthy event for the majority of women, and includes important emotional and social components not usually addressed by hospital-based maternity care;

WHEREAS healthy women giving birth in hospitals are increasingly subjected to routine interventions, which may not be evidence-based or beneficial for their specific circumstances;

WHEREAS each woman and family is unique and deserves the maternity care provider and setting that best addresses individual needs and preferences;

WHEREAS the American Public Health Association supports efforts to increase access to out-of-hospital maternity care services and increase the range of quality maternity care choices available to consumers, through recognition that legally-regulated and nationally certified direct-entry midwives can serve clients desiring safe, planned, out-of-hospital maternity care services;1

WHEREAS studies have demonstrated dramatically lower cesarean rates in out-of-hospital birth settings, an issue of great significance at a time when 29.3% of Ohio mothers are giving birth by major abdominal surgery with all of its attendant risks and the rising rate of cesarean sections nationwide is increasingly recognized as a serious public health problem;

WHEREAS Certified Professional Midwives are nationally certified providers of out-of-hospital maternity care services;

WHEREAS Certified Professional Midwives are licensed in 24 states;*

THEREFORE, we the undersigned members of Ohio Families for Safe Birth support and acknowledge the following:

The interest of the State of Ohio in the health care of its citizens;

The right of the State of Ohio to regulate licensed professionals;

The right of parents to receive qualified care from a well-trained professional;

The right of families to choose safe alternatives to hospital birth including free-standing birth centers and home birth;

The proven safety of direct-entry midwife-attended birth;

The right of parents to choose a direct-entry midwife to provide care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum;

The right of direct-entry midwives to practice without unwarranted governmental harassment;

The Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential as a mechanism to ensure entry-level competence of direct-entry midwives;

The implementation of legislation providing for direct-entry midwife licensure, using the CPM credential as a basis for licensure requirements in Ohio.

IN THE NEWS

Karen Brody’s play Birth is coming to Cincinnati August 29-31. More information in this Cincinnati Community Press article or see the Birth & Beyond website.

The issues, problems, and controversies around modern maternity care continue to make headlines. This ABC News feature discusses the dearth of natural childbirth while looking at a mom whose unexpected early labor caused her to give birth in a Cincinnati hospital instead of the NY birth center she’d planned on. “As labor pains increased and Speier asked about breathing techniques, the doctor replied, “How do I know? I’ve only ever done two [natural childbirths].” The article goes on to talk about the risks of medicalizing normal childbirth and the rising cesarean rate, as well as the advantages of midwifery care.

OFSB STATEWIDE MEETING IN COLUMBUS, JULY 26

Anyone interested in helping Ohio families maintain legal access to out-of-hospital midwifery care is warmly invited to join the Ohio Families for Safe Birth board in Columbus for a statewide meeting and grassroots training session. Recent trends in our state and nationwide mean that without a strong, coordinated consumer effort, midwifery is likely to become illegal in Ohio. If you or anyone you care about may be impacted by this, please come learn about the issues and how you can help.

WHEN: Saturday, July 26, 2008 from 1 - 5 PM

WHERE: Trinity Lutheran Church, 404 S. Third Street, Columbus, OH 43215. It is right off I-70 and I-71 (they are combined through downtown Columbus). Parking is available in the back.

REPORT FROM OFSB COLUMBUS

Blogged under Events, Ohio by admin on Tuesday 1 July 2008 at 9:36 pm

Comfest 2008 was a great success! We collected nearly 50 signatures from individual supporters and made great connections with other grassroots organizations who will likely sign on to our coalition. We will be following up soon with everyone we spoke to as we get the ball rolling on our legislative campaign. Thanks to the CHOICE midwives for letting us use their booth space, and to the volunteers who handed out information and encouraged folks to sign up!
